Three Reasons to Bring Your Friend Along to Underwater Sports!
Picture a friend you think would have a great time at your underwater sport. Are they an ex-swimmer who you can imagine cutting through the competition in underwater hockey? Or perhaps an adventurous friend who loves snorkelling when they’re on holiday? Whoever they are, this is your sign to make that leap, and bring them along to your next session!
1. The data shows it might go better than you think!
One study investigated incentives for young people to try out a new sport at their local leisure centre - and the results may surprise you. “Knowing people who already play” was only an incentive for 19% of respondents, with the No.1 being “improving my fitness”, at 37%. Other top responses included “high quality facilities” and “free introductory sessions”, suggesting people value quality over social backup when trying out new pool sports.
So, if you have a super welcoming session, with a nice pool to boot, you’re already in a prime position to bring your friend along and get involved! Plus, this provides extra evidence that free trial sessions are a great way to bring new players to your club - something to think about.
2. It’s easy for new players to get involved!
Interestingly, a lot of players’ initial objections to getting involved don’t last till the end of the session. The mask, snorkel and fins together can feel quite unwieldy, but the water makes it feel largely weightless once you’re in the water!
In my experience, I’ve taught countless people who are able to play in a match by the end of their first session. Give it four trial sessions, and most people know whether UWH is for them. Provided your friend can swim, enjoys the water, and can comfortably dive down, everything else can be fixed while having fun along the way!
3. They might become a key part of your team!
You never know who might make a key part of your team in the future! A lot of people get involved in UWH or UWR to enjoy the water and get fit, and delve into the competitive scene later as they level up their skills.
