Why Swimmers Should Dive Into Underwater Sports
Share
I've spoken previously with teammates about how it baffles me why swimmers would not make the switch to Underwater Sports: They're lightning fast, very disciplined, and more often than not competitive gala swimming does not fulfil their needs like they'd hope. Underwater sports can offer a rewarding and mutually supportive alternative, and teams all around would be glad of more swimmers in their midst!
So if you're a swimmer, let's look at why you should get stuck in:
2. Underwater Sports are Competitive!
One of the main barriers for swim enthusiasts is the idea that they cannot achieve competitive glory, or be pushed to succeed in the same way. Much to the contrary, Underwater Hockey in particular has a complete pipeline of local leagues, mix-and-match tournaments and even international competitions to work towards.
While in swimming, even a fraction of a second can mean the difference between success and failure, underwater team sports have rich tactics involved that make every match valuable in different ways.

2. They're social and supportive!
It is often said that in swimming groups, each member is competing against one another and it becomes increasingly tense as time goes on. We contend that underwater sports, being team-based, enable you to connect with other players and engage in a totally different way - all while enjoying the water to the fullest.
Everyone has their own goals, that I admit, and personal development is critical to a team's success overall. However, underwater sports teams are still able to have fun, discuss the results of matches, and support one another - making it a brilliant social opportunity.

3. It's not as difficult to get into as you think!
Swimmers often assume that underwater sports require an onslaught of unwieldy equipment, with re-training necessary to get up to speed - but they couldn't be more wrong! I have always said that by the end of an hour session, the kit itself feels weightless - simply an extension of your body.
Their problem is not their ability to swim incredibly fast in a straight line - but more to manouevre around in the water in different directions. Although, being in top-notch shape and comfortable in the water, will make the transition even easier. In underwater sports, learning to play has variety and depth, that makes even simple drills great fun.
So, what are you waiting for? If you're a swimmer, seek out your local UWH or UWR club, and go for a trial session. Local clubs are always eager to teach new people, and most offer free trial sessions while you settle. If you're not sure where your local club is, we recommend uwhmap.com for Underwater Hockey clubs. Have fun!
